Hi,

I'm totally new to building automation protocols so please excuse all of the "What's a ..." questions in the various protocol forums! I heard about Echelon, LonWorks, LonTalk but don't know what they all mean. What's the difference between LonTalk and LonWorks? Is Lon a wired protocol? What can I do with Lon? What's the difference between Lon and BACnet? Did I just open up a can of worms by asking the last question?  Wink

There is a nice site .... www.grahamcontrols.com
Look at the "about Lonworks" section.
Also, www.lonmark.org

Basically, LonTalk is the protocol. Lonworks encompasses any device utilizing Lontalk, routers, etc....

LonTalk is media independant. You can seemlessly communicate across powerlines, twisted pair, electric fence, Ethernet, etc....(whatever) Also, SNVT's (standard network variable types) are specified so multiple vendors products can reside on the same "wire". The protocol is very stable. The twisted pair is much more robust than MS/TP bacnet and you can utilize free topology. Lonworks is a full OSI 7 layer protocol whereas bacnet is not. Lonworks also has much more consistency across vendors and also the ability to utilize a standard network management tool to integrate multiple manufacturers devices easily.

Thanks for the informative links! So is there a wireless implementation of LON?
